Our Private Tour: A Perfect Fit for a Flexible Day
We chose to book a 5-hour private tour through Viator, and it turned out to be the best decision. Our guide, Yves, met us right at the port and whisked us away in a comfortable, air-conditioned car.
This kind of tour gave us the structure we needed—someone handling directions and timing—without locking us into a rigid group schedule. We covered a lot of ground without feeling rushed, and the cost was quite reasonable for private transportation. The best thing was that we got to determine our adventure.
Our original plan was to visit Cannes, Nice and Monaco. Our timing was a little crazy because Cannes was gearing up for the film festival and Monaco was getting ready for the Grand Prix. We couldn’t reasonably visit all that we wanted, so we decided to save a trip to Cannes for our next visit, but we were able to add the beautiful town of Èze.

We started early, catching one of the first tenders to shore. The harbor was peaceful, the town still quiet, and we took a few moments to soak it all in before meeting our guide.
Morning in Nice
Nice was buzzing with morning life. At the Cours Saleya market, we wandered between flower stalls and stacks of sun-ripened fruit. I grabbed a buttery croissant that was still warm from the oven—and it might have ruined me for all future croissants.
We also stumbled into a small chapel tucked near the market—quiet, reverent, and filled with handwritten notes and candles—a perfect contrast to the bustle outside.

Scenic Overlook & Notre-Dame de Laghet
On our way toward Èze, Yves made a spontaneous stop at a scenic overlook where we had a postcard view of the coastline—and could even see our cruise ship anchored in the bay far below.
Then came the surprise of the day: a stop at Notre-Dame de Laghet, a peaceful hilltop sanctuary known for miraculous healings. The church interior was filled with letters, tokens, and drawings left by visitors over the years. It was peaceful and powerful in a quiet, sacred way—one of those unexpected stops that stays with you. I honestly think we were the only people there! It felt so sacred that snapping pictures didn’t seem appropriate.
Exploring Èze
Next up was Èze, the fairytale village clinging to the cliffs, and we found the crowds. We wandered the stone alleyways, poked our noses in many shops, including the Fragonard perfume factory, and made the steep climb to the panoramic garden at the top. Worth it for the view.
Monaco for the Finale
By the time we reached Monaco, the city was buzzing with Grand Prix prep. Streets were being barricaded, crews were setting up stands, and you could feel the electricity in the air.
We strolled the royal gardens, took photos by the palace, and then enjoyed a glass of chilled French white wine with a town view before heading back to Villefranche, where we said goodbye to our new friend, Yves.
The tender return was easy, and we were back on board with time to shower, grab a bite, and toast one of the best days of the cruise.
