One Pre-Cruise Evening in NOLA

Sharing is caring!

When you only have one Pre-Cruise evening in New Orleans, what do you do?I had heard everything from “It’s amazing…the food…the music” to “Oh gosh…it’s the grossest place on earth”. The 20 hours we spent there were interesting and I’m grateful for the experience.

Checking out the action

I absolutely love traveling with my family but NOLA is an interesting place to have a group that includes teenagers, 40 somethings, and 70-year-old grandparents.  While my husband and I could have been perfectly content popping into a bar, ordering a beer and listening to some great music…that just didn’t accommodate our group.  So, we walked the streets and took in as much of the unique sites as possible.

Wedding March down Canal Street

Of course, we had to head down to the action on Bourbon Street.  There was a lot of construction on the main street.  However, we did see men on the street corner holding huge Boa Constrictor Snakes (I hi-tailed it to the other side of the street) and a wedding party and band marching right down the middle of the street.  That’s something you don’t see every day.  We settled in for dinner at Oceana Grill and all tried traditional New Orleans fare including stirring up our courage to try “fried gator”.

Would I go back to New Orleans?  Sure, but probably not anytime soon.  While I wasn’t “offended” in any way, it really just wasn’t our scene.  Maybe it did have something to do with the wide age range of our group, or maybe we were just all anxious to get our cruise vacation started….maybe it was all of the construction?  I can’t say for sure, but it was just an evening of “ok” for me.

The number of young girls wandering into the Starbucks on Sunday morning to hit the bathroom to change was enough to have this mom of a teenage girl cringing. I have a teenage daughter so that was tough to see. But, I’m not naïve enough to believe that it is unique to New Orleans. So, I hope you’ll take the time to experience it for yourself!
