Masks on a Long-Haul Flight: 5 Tips for a More Comfortable Travel Day

Sharing is caring!

Masks on a long-haul flight can be uncomfortable.

While many parts of the country are lifting their mask mandates for those who have been vaccinated, the mask mandate remains in effect for airlines and many other countries around the world.

The last 18 months without travel have been rough for me. Thankfully, I have a trip scheduled for next week. Not only will I be taking my first cruise since December 2019 but I’ll be hopping on a plane to Nassau, Bahamas. Be sure to follow along on my social media channels.

I am SO excited but also a bit anxious. Worrier strikes again.

Happy to help me out is my good friend Jessalynn a.k.a The Nerdy Traveler who has been safely traveling throughout the pandemic with tips for us on how to be more comfortable wearing a mask on a long-haul flight.

Most recently, she flew from the states to Athens, Greece. That’s 11+ hour flight! If Twitter is your social media platform of choice, be sure to check her out – @_nerdytraveler

In this Post Jessalynn shares her 5 tips for wearing a mask on a long haul flight.

Maybe it’s been a while since you’ve been on a plane – I’ve talked to plenty of people who didn’t fly at all during the pandemic. I’ve been traveling a lot the past month, with some really long travel days, and I’ve learned a few helpful tips about traveling by air with masks that will make your trip far more enjoyable.

  1.  Masks will make you hot — dress accordingly! Even the thinnest masks basically hold all of the hot air you breathe out right up next to your face. I recommend dressing in layers, with a jacket you can take off and maybe even sandals to keep cool.

2.  Bring a couple of extra masks so you can rotate. Even under the best of circumstances, you may find your mask is getting a little damp after a few hours.

3.  Wearing a mask for long periods of time can be pretty dehydrating, so make sure you’re drinking enough water. This is doubly true if, like me, you enjoy having a couple of cocktails while you travel.

4.  Take care with earrings! If you’ve got pierced ears, ditch the dangly earrings for smaller ones while you travel – it’s so easy for masks to get tangled in earrings when you’re taking them off and putting them on again.

5. Bring mints. You’re going to be smelling your own breath for several hours. I think you can do the math on this one!

Thanks for the tips, Jessalynn!

I can’t wait to travel next week.  I want to be safe and wear my mask but remember all the things I love about traveling.  Delta lounge here I come.
