There are cruise ports that feel grand, ancient, and overwhelming. And then there’s Portofino—small, sparkling, and dripping with charm (and designer logos). It’s a picture-perfect setting for a relaxed yet unforgettable Portofino cruise excursion.
This iconic village on the Italian Riviera is the stuff of postcards. Colorful buildings curve around a tiny harbor filled with yachts that probably have better furniture than my living room. It’s beautiful, it’s bougie, and—on cruise ship days—it’s very crowded.
But with a little planning (and an early tender), it can be the kind of day you remember for years.
Arriving by Cruise: What to Expect
If your cruise includes Portofino, you’ll be arriving by tender—meaning your ship will anchor in the bay, and you’ll hop onto a smaller boat to reach the village.
We visited on the Celebrity Equinox, and the tender process was smooth, but it’s a process, especially if the sea is a little choppy. If you want time to explore without elbowing through crowds, grab an early tender ticket. The harbor area fills up fast, and this is not the place you want to be stuck behind a slow group trying to find their selfie angles.
Cruiser Tip: Tender ports = plan buffer time. Always

Do You Need to Book an official Portofino Cruise Excursion?
It depends.
If you’re planning to stay in town and just want to wander, snack, and take in the views, you can explore on your own. The village is walkable, and most significant sites (like Castello Brown and the Church of San Giorgio) are accessible with just a pair of good shoes and some stamina.
However, because it was our first time at this port, we opted for a cruise line excursion : a walking tour + entrance to Castello Brown for $58 per person. The price was fair and the timing worked well for us, especially with the tender logistics. That said, the entrance fee to the castle is only about €8, so if you’re confident navigating on your own, you’ll save money. It’s a highlight of the harbor area so once you’re headed in the right direction, you’re all set. Just keep climbing up, up and up.
How We Spent Our Day in Portofino
As early risers, we made the most of that first tender and had time to explore the harbor before it filled up.
Our walking tour began just after, with a friendly guide leading us through the narrow streets and explaining the history of this once-modest fishing village turned international hotspot. This small-group Portofino cruise excursion gave us a great overview of the village without feeling rushed. After a short time wandering around the town, we head up.
The climb up to Castello Brown was steeper than expected. We had a few older guests in our group opt out halfway up—and I don’t blame them. The incline is real. But if you can make it, the view from the top is THE shot of Portofino. You see the curve of the harbor, the rooftops, and the sea stretching forever.
We even found a tiny café at the top—unexpected and so welcome. Drinks with a view? Yes, please. Plus, Don’t miss the focaccia! It was SO good.
After descending, we strolled back through town and were surprised at just how packed the little village had become. There were people everywhere. We planned to pick up some local pasta and some more focaccia, but the lines were out the door. The line for the public restroom was even longer, so we decided to head back to the ship. We were thankful that we had beat the crowds earlier in the morning.
Our tender ride back to the ship was a bit of a dramatic end to a dreamy day. The rain, waves, and wind lead to one very choppy ride back to the ship. Thankfully, it’s a fairly short ride, but it seemed a lot longer when they were handing out the vomit bags. We seemed to be going up and down more than we were advancing. But we made it safe and sound. While it was a bit rough, we never felt unsafe, and the crew was great.
Final Thoughts
Portofino is the kind of place that’s so picture-perfect it almost feels unreal—until you’re climbing a steep path, dodging an umbrella, and sipping an aperol spritz in a 16th-century fortress. A well-planned Portofino cruise excursion lets you experience the best of this luxurious little town—even if your time is limited.
Is it fancy? Yes.
Is it crowded? Definitely.
Is it worth your time? Absolutely. Adventures and seeing someplace new are ALWAYS worth your time.
You don’t need a lot of time here to fall in love—you just need a little planning and a bit of flexibility. No matter your style of exploring, there’s a Portofino cruise excursion to match your pace and preferences.
