St. John, in the U.S. Virgin Islands is one of the most breathtakingly beautiful places we have ever visited. When we have a cruise port day in St. Thomas we hop the ferry over to St. John. This time, enjoying a hike to Honeymoon Beach.
We get off the ship as early as possible and head out of the cruise terminal. We walk a few blocks and catch the local bus to Red Hook. A short ferry ride later, costing approx. $17 per person round trip, we arrive on St. John.
Our first stop is always at Cruz Bay Landing. This time for a morning Mimosa and a chat with the staff where we ask, “Where should we go today?” The team at The Landing is fantastic, and they always have great suggestions.
This time, we were in the mood for a little exploration, so the bartender directed us to the Lind Point Trail and the hike to Honeymoon Beach in Solomon Bay. She mentioned that there was a dingy ride available for $5, but we were up for the hike.
In hindsight, we probably should have not worn flip flops…but it all worked out.
The Hike to Honeymoon Beach
From Cruz Bay, the trail access is quite close. When you arrive via the ferry, there is a white Parks Visitor Center building just to your left. The trail access is located behind that building.
It had recently rained so the below image is a good example of what the trail looked like most of the way. I have to say, being a worrier, I got a little anxious. But, what’s the worst that could happen? If the trail became impassable, we would turn around.
And, my constant comfort with all things in life, was the fact that my big strong husband was there by my side. ❤️
I believe those on horseback rides also take this path because they left a few “clues” behind. I mentioned this in my Top Travel for 2018 if you want to check out that post. Our hike to Honeymoon Beach snuck into my top 2018 at the last minute, but I couldn’t resist including it.
While the path was a bit soggy from the morning rain and the directional signage may have been a little damaged, we made it!
Arriving at the beach, you know that it was worth the hike to Honeymoon Beach in beautiful Soloman Bay.
Honeymoon Beach is gorgeous. The water is the most spectacular shade of blue, and the beach indeed looks like a hidden gem. In reality, by water, Solomon Bay is just around the bend from Cruz Bay. So, if you are worried about catching the return ferry to St. Thomas, fear not! But you will need to plan ahead. See my cruise tip below.
The beach has a fun rustic vibe but, with all of the facilities that you would want for a fabulous day at the beach!
Bikini’s Beach offers sandwiches and drinks (including alcohol). There is also a nice lounge area, kayak rentals, stand up paddles boards, changing rooms, lockers and more.
It has everything you need for a perfect day on the beach!
And, if you are tired from your hike to Honeymoon Beach and your day in the sun, remember to schedule your dingy ride return to Cruz Bay ferry dock for just $5 per person. Dingy rides are scheduled at the beach services counter.
Cruise pro tip: The afternoon return ferries to St. Thomas are quite busy with school children and workers. Ferries run on the hour but if you are in line and the boat fills up, you will have to wait. Do not plan on taking the latest ferry possible for your return to the ship.
