Cruise Port Day In Costa Rica: The Limon Triple Adventure

Sharing is caring!

Costa Rica is a place where vibrant wildlife meets lush landscapes, and I had the joy of experiencing it firsthand during our visit to Puerto Limon in November. This was our first time in Costa Rica and we were SO excited to explore.

When visiting a new cruise port, I always think that a combo tour is a great way to get a very general overview of the area and then fine-tune your experience if/when you can return. Through the Limon Triple Adventure: Bridges, Boats & Bananas tour, we uncovered a glimpse of this tropical wonderland. If you’re considering this excursion during your Royal Caribbean cruise, here’s everything you need to know!

Booking & Logistics: Limon Triple Adventure Excursion in Puerto Limon Costa Rica

We secured this tour through the Royal Caribbean Cruise Planner, catching a sale price of $99.99 per person. Considering the experience and convenience, I thought the price was fair! The tour started at 10:45 a.m. and consisted of three unique segments:

     •           Hiking in the rainforest and walking over suspension bridges

     •           A boat ride on the river (canal)

     •           A visit to a banana “plantation” exhibit

Our group traveled in a comfortable, air-conditioned motor coach with an overhead storage rack. While there wasn’t a restroom on board, facilities were available at each stop.

1. Boats: Wildlife & Rainforest Views

The first leg of our adventure was a scenic ride aboard a large pontoon boat. Guided by a knowledgeable local expert, we cruised through calm waters surrounded by lush rainforest. While the ride was relatively short, it was packed with incredible wildlife sightings:

     •           Countless bird species

     •           A small alligator lazily basking on the riverbank

     •           Several lizards, a few sloths, and endless tropical vegetation

Our guide ensured both sides of the boat had great views, but a word of advice: stay seated for safety! We were also provided with a snack of chips and a bottle of water, a nice touch during the humid morning.

2. Bridges: Suspended in Beauty

Though I’m not a fan of heights, this portion turned out to be my favorite part of the day!  We really enjoy hiking and exploring in nature. The rainforest hike included several suspension bridges, each offering incredible perspectives of the dense jungle below.

Here are a few tips if you’re considering this tour:

     •           Stay close to the guide! It’s easier to enjoy the tour when you can hear the details and what makes the area special.

     •           Wear proper footwear. I managed fine in Teva sandals, but the trail was slick and muddy in places. Shoes with tread are a must!

     •           Expect some slippery slopes. While the hike isn’t strenuous, it does require good mobility and some agility.

The guide was exceptional, offering fascinating insights into the rainforest’s ecosystem while ensuring everyone felt comfortable.

3. Bananas: Learning About Local Agriculture

The final stop was a visit to a banana “plantation” exhibit. While it wasn’t an authentic working plantation, it offered an educational glimpse into the banana industry.

Our guide walked us through the entire process—from the growth of the fruit to its harvest and export. There were also exhibits featuring other local crops like pineapples and the fragrant Ylang Ylang tree (a key ingredient in perfumes).

The stop also included a gift shop where you could purchase local coffee, chocolate, and other souvenirs. While not the most immersive part of the tour, it was an informative and relaxing way to end the day.

Final Thoughts: Is the Limon Triple Adventure Worth It?

For a first visit to Puerto Limon, the Limon Triple Adventure is an excellent introduction to the area’s beauty and culture. At the sale price, it was a good value for an organized, worry-free experience.

I would recommend this tour for first-time visitors (with good mobility). This is a fantastic choice if you’re seeking a well-rounded excursion with manageable activities and many photo opportunities.

We hope to return to Costa Rica, and when we do, we will fine-tune our experience by focusing on our favorite portion of the day, hiking in the rainforest.

Worrier’s Guide

     •           Return to Ship Guarantee: Since this was a Royal Caribbean tour, there was no stress about making it back to the ship on time.

     •           Snacks vs. Meals: While the tour spans over mealtime, no full meal is provided—just light snacks.

     •           Restrooms: Available at every stop, with ample time for breaks.

     •           Bug Spray: Pack some! I loved using bug-repellent wipes for this trip—they were easy to pack and effective against rainforest critters.

The Bottom Line

Costa Rica left a beautiful mark on my heart. From spotting sloths to crossing suspension bridges and learning about banana farming, the Limon Triple Adventure offered a diverse taste of this lush paradise.
